The A-OM #6 is a very special guitar build. It was a giant step towards my idea of a pure finger style guitar. This guitar was built during a course named “Modern Guitar” during my studies to become a luthier. The idea was to further develop my model A-OM and make it more optimized for finger style. The OM size feels like a good shape that is not to big so it becomes uncomfortable but it is not to small enough compromise the sound. I started by deciding to use Swiss moonharvested spruce since European spruce is very well suited for playing finger style. I also decided to use fan-fret to get the best of two worlds between a 25,5″ scale length and a 25″. This created a slight problem, the standard X-brace was no longer the best choice since the position of the bridge is different and placed at an angle. The finished bracing was a regular X-pattern but it is offset which makes the bass side more open and the treble side more stiff. The result of all this was that I feel it was easier to control the bass and treble when tuning the top. I also added a floating back-brace which is an idea from Jeff Traugott. I think the floating back-brace helps the bass a lot in achieving a thight and responsive sound.
The goal I am aiming for when building finger style guitars is a responsive guitar that still sounds big and an has a rich and full tone. Another important aspect for me is the dynamics and harmonies often used in finger style music.
When I heard the guitar for the first time I became surprised. I did not think I would be able to achieve a sound so close to my final goal on the first try. This guitar will be my starting point for my fingerstyle guitars.
